Upon my arrival into rainy Rotorua, I was greeted with the stench of rotten eggs...mmmmm yummy I thought. This place is home to Geothermal Spa's which contain the discusting smelling sulphur...hence the eggy smell. We got to (what i will describe) as the most repulsive hostel in the whole of New Zealand, Hot Rocks Base. It looked like a delapidated secondary school and the bedrooms we minging and the kitchen was infested with cockroaches and Pembo got bitten by bed bugs in our carpet. As a result of our unpleasant experience they refunded us 2 of the 3 nights accomodation and gave us some free drinks vouchers. To be honest, nothing could make me happy in this hostel...not even if Brad Pitt turned up and draped himself across my grotty bed.
Anyways...As the weather was pretty pants we caught up on some internet time and also went in their outside hot pool, which thankfully did not smell of rotting eggs. We wandered around the town centre and as always our little Heather did some souvenir shopping. Bless her.
We had booked to go to a tradtional Maouri Village called te maki (i think!) We were picked up at 7pm from our hell hole hostel and taken to a forresty place...my description is amazing eh? It was brillant, we saw them perform the Haka (which is by far the manliest thing I have ever seen!) and they also showed various other dances in full costume. It was such an interesting evening and to top it all off we had the best buffet dinner ever! There was so much food we practically rolled onto the coach. The journey back to the hostel was quite amusing as the driver made each nationality sing songs....As Pembo and I are rather lairy we decided to join in with everyones songs which i think everyone appreciated. ha ha. We ended up in lava bar (our hostel bar which is clearly where all their money went as it is quite nice) Pembo had a dance off with the campest guy I have ever seen and then we were dancing like complete k*** heads which we enjoyed and obviously so did everyone else...well..I think!
The highlight of Rotorua was by far Lugeing (doesnt look like I can spell) Anyways, you go up in the cable car thingy to the top of this hill and get given a cart thingy and bascially you race down these tracks and its the most fun ever. Pembo, Laura, Adie, Matt and I were all racing eachother and matt took Pembo out and she landed in a ditch...must admit it was really bloody funny but matt felt really bad about it and kept apologising to Pembo! After the get to the bottom of the hill you have to get THE SLOWEST ever chairlift up. It was brilliant! It started teaming down with rain so we retreated to the cafe until it stopped. Flippin' Weather!
I was going on the "East As" trip and none of the other girls were, but I was meeting back up with Laura and Heather in Auckland but my little ginger friend Pembo was off to Fiji. It was a tearful goodbye but I cant wait to see that fruit loop in England!
