We drove around Napier a bit before following Tom's excellent directions to his farm which is about 20 minutes out of town in a gorgeous rural setting. Tom gave us an excellent guided tour, explaining all aspects of sheep and cattle and timber farming; it was fascinating.
First he took us into the barn where the lambs and sheep ready for market are separated from those that need more time in the field. He explained how the sheep are sheared and how the wool is graded and packaged. Then we went in his pickup for a drive all around the 1100 acre farm including up to the highest mountain top. It was a 4 wheel drive, off-road trip which I think must compare to bungy jumping and jet boating for thrills! The hillsides were an emerald green and the view from the top was spectacular. You can even see the sea from their farm.
Tom had over 1600 sheep and lambs this spring; many of them have recently been sold. He also has many cattle and a forest which will soon be harvested. He is helped by his four dogs who do a fantastic job of rounding up the animals and herding them into the pens by a series of whistles and commands. Each dog responds to different whistles and knows when to go left or right or stay or whatever Tom commands. They performed perfectly, and we were very impressed.
Before going to work today Maureen had prepared a wonderful lunch of chicken and tossed salad for us which we ate at a table decorated with flowers from their garden. It was lovely.
We had a memorable day which was a highlight of our trip. Thank you both, Tom and Maureen.
On our way to Taupo this afternoon we passed the beautiful waterfall called Waipunga Falls. When we arrived in Taupo we followed Tom's recommendation to stay at the Taupo DeBretts Thermal Resort campground. We went to the hot mineral pools before dinner. There are two big pools, several hot tubs and a series of private pools, a waterslide, and a children's pool. This is a great place for families.
