Before we left our campground, Bob noticed an interesting machine trimming what we called hedges, but here are called "shelter breaks." The breaks are all along the roadsides to protect against the winds; we wondered how they were kept so tidy.
On our way to Bluff, we passed field after field after field of elk. When I stopped to take a photo, an inquisitive girl peaked over the fence at me.
Bluff, which is 27 km south of Invercargill, is at land's end on the southern coast of the South Island; this very old town is a major port. It is also where the ferry departs for Stewart Island. It is always a rough journey through the Fouveaux Strait, but it would have been especially rough today as it was very windy.
We went to Stirling Point, which was named after Capt William Stirling; the area was once a whaling station. The signpost is "World Famous" as they say.
One of NZ's major industrial complexes is the huge Tiwai Aluminum smelter in Bluff. Aluminum is an important NZ export. I was interested to see it as I used to teach about the process of removing Al from its ore using electricity.
Then we returned back to Invercargill which is the largest city in Southland. The Southland Museum is fabulous. One of my favorite parts is the Tuatara exhibit; they breed these interesting ancient reptiles who live for a very long time. Henry is estimated to be 115 years old, and he still looks good for his age.
Bob's favorite is the Burt Munro exhibit. Burt was from Invercargill and built his World's Fastest Indian here. He raced it at over 200 mph on the Salt Flats of Utah in the 60s.
Then we walked through the Queens Park Gardens located next to the Museum, and I couldn't resist taking photos of some gorgeous roses.
We stopped at an interesting toilet in the park; it is fully automated -- toilet paper, soap, water, hand dryer (it flushes automatically when you wash your hands) and when the door slides closed, music begins playing. Time limit inside is 10 minutes.

Connie Actually, I have seen hedge trimmers similar in FL, along the highways.
