Day 5 - Enter the Horsefly!
After our busy day on Maggie we knew we had a fair old drive to get to Airlie Beach on Friday. Can't believe we've been away from home for nearly a week already. We took the Bruce HW for a laid back 3.5hr drive to Airlie. Helen saw 3x wild camels, holly missed them as she was napping. It's amazing how quickly the landscape changes, one minute it can be as flat as the fens and then next were in between peaks.
As we get close to Airlie it starts to rain. It's hot rain here, no matter how tropical the showers the humidity does seem to drop.
Our campsite in Airlie is not dissimilar to a Centre Parcs cabin. Woodland, bark, birds, all very relaxing. Enter the Horsefly! They're big b*****s...and stupid too. 'You came in the door, go out the door. The windows all have nets on'. Holly and Helen take two different approaches, both involving a shoo. Helen shoos them out the door, Holly splats them with what ever flip flop is available.
The weather held up for a while and we made our way to the beach, and it is beautiful. Calm, blue, palm trees, Island on the horizon, once again breathtaking. They really are spoilt here.
This resort is a haven for backpackers so the local walkabout, a pub aptly named 'Beaches' served beer and had the cricket on.
We contemplated dinner options and headed to 'Shipwrecked' which seemed to serve seafood and a looked out over the bay. Happy Clarkey! :)
