After about 2 hours in total of a very uncomfortable sleep we got to Bangkok at about 10past10.We then took a taxi north to the bus station and from there caught a bus up to Pak Chong to explore Khao Yai National Park for a day or 2.
It took 3 hours on the bus and we hadn't a clue on what to do or where to go once there.Luckily withour lonelyplanet being the bible, we picked Greenleaf.Stranded, we gave them a ring and they came and picked us up from the town centre.Well, we didnt ring them, a guy from a shop rung them as Dave couldnt work out the phone!
Greenlead is a very basic hostel, literally a mattress, toilet, freezing cold shower and sink, but very clean and only £1.50 each.
Excited and so looking forward to having a lie down and kip we were immediately pursuaded into signing onto a half day tour...we had 20 mins to rest.
Piling onto the back of a pickup truck, with other guests from Canada, America, Holland and Oz we were taken to a fresh waterspring. However, when we got there it was packed full of locals so we decided to come back later on.
Our nex stop was a bat cave which houses over 2000 of the little b*****s.On the way there, we stopped numerous times as the guide had seen birds (eagles, hawks) from about 3million miles away!
We eventually got to the cave and took the steep stairway down into darkness.Well, not complete darkness as the cave was lit up in various places and the first thing you come across is a shrine of the buddha. These are scattered all over the cave for the monks who come down often, turn off all the lamps and meditate for hours in complete blackness.
The guide took us deep into the cave where we became face to face with sleeping, hanging, upside down bats, oh and also 2 little dogs that for some reason lived down there and are looked after by the monks - they are called Adam and Eve.
There were times where we nearly had to crawl through the passages and then suddenly appear in huge roooms where it would be lit up with meditating spots.
Eventually we climbed out into the open and were then taken to the main bat cave in Pak Chong which houses over 2million bats and we waited for them to fly out into the night.
A about quarter to 6, one by one each bat flew out until gradually 100's and 1000's would be flying out at once (look at the video). It created a black line in the sky where hawks would swoop down and grab a bat to eat.All the guide kept on saying was "bat burger, bat burger"!
On the way back, we were taken out into the open and made to stand about 10 feet away from each other and were told to remain quiet and still. Not really knowing what to expect, 100's of bats started to dart round our heads, missing by only cm's!!We then stopped off at the natural spring, though we were both knackered from travelling for 24 hours so decided t sit at the side and watch a lizard.
The evening back at the guesthouse was fun, loads of us sat round a large table, eating declicious Thai food, drinking beer and just talking!
Tomorrow we go on the full day tour.
