It had been rainging in the night so we had to pack up a wet tent. Not the most desirable pastime at 8 in morning.
We soo got on the road again though, this time heading North with no definate idea of where we were going to stay for the night. Our first stop off was Fredo's pies in a small town called Frederickton. A small pie shop that has over 50 varieties including crocodile, emu ostrich and kangaroo. We went for chicken, cheese, asaragus and pasta. It was delicious!! Though some discussion was had over David having eaten the middle and Claire having only been left with crust. It was at this point that Claire vowed to never share another pie with david again. Ever.
A couple of hours laterwe reached Coffs Harbour, a possible place to stay for the night. Coffs Harbour is famous for starting Australia's 'big things' craze. In 1964 they built a 'big banana' on the side of the road as a tourist attraction. Obviously we had to take a look at this important point of history. As well as the 'big banana' there was also a banana museum and a banana shop selling everything you could posibbly associate with bananas. Banana cheese anyone? After the success of the 'big banana' other 'big things' started popping up all over Australia so Dave now wants to see every 'big thing' in Australia. This could take some time as there are more than a 100 and so far he has only seen 1.
More hours passed and we got to Balina, another place we'd considered stopping for the night but driving through there was only thing of interest to us a 'big prawn' so once we'd seen that we moved on. It was just getting to sunset and we arrived at Byron Bay, so we decided to find a campsite and setup the tent.
After a quick beans on toast for tea we went for a look round the town, just a '10 minute walk' was quoted by the campsite. It was actually more like a '30 minute power stride'. But we got there eventually!
It's a nice beach town with a cool casual Aussie atmosphere and everyone is apparently already our 'mate'. We found a bar that was quite busy with some live music and got chatting to a couple of girls from Adelaide. They confused our Northen accents with Irish at first which was a new one!
We were just about to leave for an early night when we got a text from Aidan & Linda, the Irish couple we shared a dorm room with in Sydney, they also were in Byron Bay so they came down to meet us for a few drinks. It was great to catch up with them and we'll probably meet up again in Cairns further up the coast.
