Once again we braved the trials of the US highway system. The road out of Vegas was easy enough, however getting fuel turned out to be harder than any of us thought. Firstly, we had to remember which side the fuel tank was on. Right side, step 1. Secondly, we had to find out how to open the fuel cap. Open driver door, check EVERY possible switch, knob, handle. Nothing. Check passenger side. Nothing. Check car remote. Nothing. Check fuel cap. Oh, just need to push in and it comes out. Step 2. Thirdly, fill car. Put nozzle in car, press handle, nothing. Select type of petrol. Nothing. Scratch head. Turns out we have to go inside and pay with credit card first and select how much we want. Go inside, talk to a representative of the, shall we say ‘shallow end of the gene pool’. We paid $50US and filled up about $42 and then drove off. Turns out we are supposed to go back inside to redeem our credit.
So, off towards the Grand Canyon and over the Hoover Dam, or at least some form of new bridge as we didn’t even see the dam. We continued to see small patches of snow on the drive, and then as we turned north into the Grand Canyon National Park the snow became thicker on the ground. We arrived at The Bright Angel Lodge about dusk and the carpark was completely icy. We checked in and went to our room and found that they had shoveled the snow away from our door. We unpacked and went to dinner in the Arizona Steakhouse. Both room and restaurant about 5m away from the South Rim of the Canyon.
