For our last day in Hong Kong we headed over to Lantau Island, where the airport is based, to visit the Tian Tan Buddha. We hadn't realised before hand that the day we had chosen to go was a public holiday, and we hadn't pre-booked our tickets, so we had to queue for over an hour, but it was well worth it. To get there we had to take a cable car to a village called Ngong Ping, and we chose to take the glass bottomed cable car! This was a bit scary, as we were so high up, but there were some really great views showing us what was beneath us as we went over the harbour and up the side of the mountain. The village itself wasn't particularly special, it's just a themed village that was built to sell things to the tourists who go to visit the Buddha, but there was also a monastery to visit. The Po Lin Monastery had large golden statues of buddha inside, and outside were people lighting huge incense sticks bigger than me! After seeing the monastery we went to see the Big Buddha, which was up around 150 ish steps, and it was absolutely boiling! It took a few stops on the way up, but we did make it to the top and got to see the Buddha close up which was good. There were also some really great views over the island. Having seen the Buddha we decided we had done enough sightseeing, and made our way back towards the cable car to head back down the mountain, seeing some wild cows on the way. Because it was so hot we headed straight to the airport to make use of their air conditioning, and checked in for our overnight flight to Australia!
