Today we took a day trip to Macau, which is about an hour away from Hong Kong by ferry. It is really tiny, but about 600,000 people live there and it seemed like they were all out and about! When we arrived we took a bus straight to Senado Square, which is the cultural centre of Macau. It is a mix of Portuguese architecture and Chinese culture, so it has a really interesting feel, kind of like being back in Europe. First of all we looked around for somewhere to eat, and found a restaurant down a side alley full of locals, where we ordered some food that was a mix of Portuguese and Chinese cuisine - delicious! Luckily this restaurant gave everybody knives and forks, as I haven't mastered chop sticks yet! After that we started to explore, visiting loads of the old churches - these were great because they were a lot cooler than the outside temperature and some even had air conditioning! Then we went to see the main attraction in the centre, which are the Ruins of St Paul, which used to be a church but now only the outside walls remain. They are at the top of a lot of steps, so it was quite a trek to get there! While we were there we also had natas, which are Portuguese egg tarts, they tasted just as good as the ones we used to get from the Roll Bar back home. Finally we climbed to the top of a hill to visit Fortaleza do Monte, which is a fortress overlooking Macau and mainland China, which was just across a river from where we were. We had a great time exploring, but walking around in 30+ degree heat is starting to get extremely tiring, Perth is going to be a relaxing holiday after sight seeing in Hong Kong!
