Today we met up with our friend Mat, who we haven't seen since we all finished uni and Joel and I moved back to Guernsey. Mat is living in Hong Kong, but has only been here for a month, so we met up in Kowloon to explore. After spending around an hour looking for somewhere to eat, and getting completely lost, we decided to make our way across to the Centrral District on Hong Kong island. We made our way to the Mid-Levels Escalators, which are a set of escalators that go only downhill in the morning to take people to work and then only uphill for the rest of the day to take people up the hill, so it was a nice relaxing way to work our way up the island. About halfway up we finally found somewhere to eat, a place called Cafe de Coral which is like a Chinese version of McDonalds, with very cheap but tasty food. After that we made our way up to the very top of the escalators, and then visited Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens, which is a really nice relaxing area with a free zoo to look around! Mat had to leave us then to meet up with his housemates, so we made our way back to the hotel as unfortunately the huge fireworks display that had been planned for tonight (Chinese National Day) had been cancelled due to large pro-democracy protests that have been going on whilst we have been here (apparently there were lots of protesters in Central but we didn't see any today). However, to make up for the lack of fireworks Joel and I found a Dim Sum restaurant, so we could finally sample all of the delicious dumplings and treats our guide book had been telling us about - it really was amazing, and again very cheap! Then we went back to the hotel to pack our bags ready for our flight to Perth tomorrow, which luckily isn't until 10pm so we still have another full day to spend exploring Lantau Island which is the island where the airport is situated. There is a cable ride up to the top of the island which we are really looking forward to, 25 minutes in a glass bottomed cabin, so there should be some great views (weather permitting)!
