Siam Reap was where we met up with Kat (who left Australia early to spend time with some family living in Borneo), Ally and Jess (2 Canadians the girls had met in South America before I met up with them) and Adam who we met up the east coast in Australia so it turned into a pretty big group with 8 of us!
The first day we went for lunch at a butterfly restaurant which was really cool…the owners buy butterflies from the local children who catch them with nets and we happened to be there at the time they release them from the nets. After that we went to the Ipod shop and bought lots of cheap music, films and tv shows for our ipods…as I had a laptop I got to upload everything everyone else had bought too!
The next day we organised a trip to a floating village which was amazing! It was an entire village that lives in floating houses in the middle of a massive river! We got to tour the village on a boat and also visit the local floating school and meet some of the children and take them gifts which was nice. At one point a boat came along with a small naked boy on it with a snake around his neck…everyone started taking photos and then he proceeded to ask us for dollars…the Cambodians really have inventive ways of making money off tourists!
We arranged tuk tuk drivers to take us to Angkor Wat and the other temples in the area and got a 3 day ticket. We were supposed to watch the sunset at Angkor Wat on the first day but after looking around a massive rain storm came in and we got completely soaked and so had to miss it! Our driver took us to his friends place for food…Charlotte asked for Cashew nuts and they brought out green beans, when we laughed he told us he realised what she wanted and took them away…only to bring them back fried which was hilarious!
The next morning we got to watch the sunrise at Angkor Wat which was beautiful. Me and Charlotte had to miss out on seeing the temple where Tomb Raider was filmed as we were feeling ill and had to get the tuk tuk driver to take us back to town! Think dodgy stomachs and lack of toilets!!
By the 3rd day we were pretty templed out so Me, Liz, Adam and Jess decided not to do a full day and arranged to get picked up in time to watch the sunset so chilled in the hotel pool playing ball games! For the sunset we went to a temple that was uphill so we got a great view of the Angkor Wat and the sunset.
That night we went for dinner and our waiter was my favourite Cambodian ever…he was gay, flamboyant and very funny! He told us he was lonely and didn't have many friends and that we were all really lucky as we were a big group of friends and he wanted us to be his friends too! He was so cute and really excited at talking with us!
