Cambodia was HOT upon arrival! Verry humid! Also very cheap compared to Australia and Singapore which was most welcome!
We started our Cambodian journey in the capital of Phnom Penh which was the epitome of South East Asian capitals…noisy, bustley, crowded etc. We pre-booked our accommodation online and ended up being in one of the poorer areas of the city but this meant that it was very cheap. We arrived late afternoon and in the evening charlotte and I went for a walk to find a shop. We probably should have been scared to walk around by ourselves as it was a bit of a dodgy looking neighbourhood but it was fine and very exciting to be in asia!
The next day was a pretty chilled one as we were so tired from all the travelling so after a long lie in we took a tuk tuk down to the riverfront which is the main tourist area to get some food. Two small boys tried to sell us some books and when we refused they said they were going to follow us around all day until we gave in and that they were going to hurt us….they were only small, about 6 at the most!!!!! We looked in the lonely planet and found a nice restaurant….the oldest Indian restaurant in the city which ended up being a fair walk away but was really nice food…I got a set meal with 2 curries, naan, rice, raita (and some other interesting looking things which I don't remember the name of) which was a massive amount of food and only cost about $5 (they use US $ in Cambodia as well as their own currency)!
The 3rd day we arranged a tuk tuk tour to visit the Killing Fields and S21 prison. Both were amazingly interesting and chilling in equal measures. It was interesting to learn of the trouble the country had experienced under the Khmer Rouge years but also very sad. At the Killing Fields you could actually see bones and clothing coming out of the ground because of flooding. At the prison (which scarily used to be a school before the Khmer Rouge took it over) you could see photographs of all the prisoners and it was awful as you could actually see the fear in their eyes.
On the 4th day we visited the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. It was really interesting to walk around and in the palace and temples but it was a boling hot day and even the locals were sweating and fanning themselves which is when you know that its bad so we didn't last very long!
