After Sihanoukville we headed along the coast and inland to a place called Kampot which one of our friends had recommended. They told us to stay in a place Bodhi Villas which they said was one of the nicest places they had stayed when they were travelling. When we got there though we weren't convinced and both charlotte and I wanted to find somewhere else but as Liz (who we met in Sydney and travelled the east coast with us) was meeting us there we had to stay. It turned out to be a nice place in the end its just that the rooms were really claustrophobic (definitely no room to swing a cat!) and really hot. The setting was beautiful though, right by the river and we went for a swim which was amazingly surreal! Liz came just as we were in the middle of the river so there was lots of screaming and fast swimming to get back to the jetty to welcome her!
There was an Australian girl staying there who was very annoying! She proceeded to get drunk in the bar and play the most awful music ever and dance around like an idiot! Our room had windows that were facing out towards the bar so we were kept up until 3am listening to her sing along to the godawful music!!
We found another great café called the Epic Arts Café which ran projects to help disabled locals providing therapy and training through the medium of art…including music, dancing, crafts and art. The food was again amazing, possibly one of the best meals ever!! I had a vegetarian platter and it was delicious!
The next day we got the bus to Kep where we could catch a ferry to a place called Rabbit Island. The weather was pretty bad and when we arrived the sea looked really choppy and we were debating whether we should actually go but Becky decided we should as we were there and it was the worst journey ever! The 'ferry' was actually just a long tail type boat and the waves in the middle were massive and everything got completely soaked and we were pretty scared!!
When we go to the island we had to walk across to the other side as that's where we were staying and Liz fell over! The setting was beautiful, we were staying in wooden huts right on the beach, its just a pity the weather wasn't very good! The next morning was sunny though and we went for a swim in the sea and sunbathed before the boat came to collect us. We met an interesting character from Germany who was pretty funny. He told us he had been travelling for 9 years, he stayed in each country for a year and each place for a month so he had been on this island which literally has nothing except huts to sleep in and a few shack style restaurants…he had been detoxing from meat, smoking, alcohol and sex! Not sure how much he was telling us was the truth but he had some great tales to tell!
After the island we went back to Kampot and stayed in The Magic Sponge where we met a guy from Leeds who was running the bar and had lived in Kampot for nearly a year and loved it and was advising us on everything we could do in the area but we were leaving the next morning on an early bus to Siam Reap so we had a bit of a walk round and then chilled out in the hammocks and watched films.
