We were really excited the next morning to get on a ferry to Phu Quoc island- this is the honeymoon part of the trip where we had a fancy resort booked for 5 nights :)
About 4 different friends had recommended the island so lots to look forward to!
The ferry ride was fine, we sat next to some Dutch people who we did the one day Mekong delta tour with, they were really nice and gave us some great tips for Cape Town and one of them had recently lived there. We arrived to the island with chaos, hundreds of taxi and moto drivers all wanting to take everyone to their hotel, we ended up in a crappy van with other backpackers- the cheapest option! When the driver dropped us off he went a bit past our resort to the budget place across the road (also owned by famiana resort) he didn't believe we were staying at the nice resort! Ha! We do look like cheap backpackers! When we entered the resort the door man also checked we had come to the right place! Anyway they sat us down and gave us a welcome drink of juice then took us to our beautiful room. We were in a bungalow one back from the pool and we could see a little bit of the beach too. They had made it up lovely for us with swans made from towels on our bed with flowers, and flowers in the sink, bath, and a cake that said 'happy honey moon!' We are some cake then headed to the beach where we lazed around for the rest of the day on the sun beds. They beach was ok, but the water was very wam (no so refreshing) and although the resort cleans the beach there was still rubbish floating about every now and then. We at lunch at a restaurant on the beach next door- out resort was too pricey!!! Over the next few days we lazed around a lot, we also did a snorkelling tour which was ok. The snorkelling wasn't as good as nha trang, but it took is to a beautiful little island with a beach where the water was crystal clear and the sand white see the album pic! Just beautiful! The boat also stopped for 20mins of fishing, I caught a little fish and decided to throw him back, some of the other ppl kept theirs to have cooked for lunch. I should have just given mine to someone, when I threw him back he just floated belly up!!! :( on the way back it rained, didn't matter though it was so hot! They took us to Sao beach which was nice, but apparently usually much nicer and more electric blue but the water was quite stirred up from the rain. We saw the Dutch couple, their snorkelling tour hadn't taken them to an island so didn't sound as good. If you book one- go with johns tours! The rain came in again, got some good pics over the water, then we got our van back to the resort. Most nights we walked along the beach to find a restaurant to eat at- there are so many to choose from! Town didn't have much in the way of food other than the night markets where Chris got fresh seafood one night. We had an AMAZING dinner at a place called Mondo, a tappas place, the food was incredible- but not actually Vietnamese despite it saying having Vietnamese influence! For dessert I had a goey chocolate cake to die for!!!! The food was more expensive than normal but still under $30 for the two of us and we had 4 dishes and beers. YUM!! One day we hired a scooter and drove to the north of the island. Was nice to get out and about but took a long time to get places! Saw some nice beaches, one covered in the most amazing shells! Wish I could have taken some but anyway still have lots left over from the wedding so no way Chris was gonna let me!! One place we stopped at for a photo there were some little kids, they wanted to talk to me so we were chatting and I asked them to show me what they were collecting in a jar... GIANT BUGS!!!! One of the kids pulled one out and chased me with it down the hill to the beach!! They thought it was hilarious, I didn't! We then drove down the north west coast of the island, again... It started to rain! At one point we decided we weren't coming all this way and not having a swim so we parked the bike and jumped in the water just as it poured down! Swimming in the rain was fun! It tipped it down and did not stop. We ended up having to drive back to our hotel in pouring rain- it took us about 1.5 hours so was not much fun at all, especially since most of the roads were mud. We were freezing when we got back and stinging from the rain drops! I guess it was a bit of an adventure tho! Overall Phu quoc was good fun and very relaxing. They beaches are nice but still, they've got nothing on Perth! The island had lots of development happening including a new international airport so I think in 10 yeas time it will be a different place!
