Rob was in charge of planning today so we started early and met a walking tour in plaza independencia. The girl was really interesting, especially as we later found out it was her first tour, and started with a walk through the old town, explaining loads of the history and a bit about Uruguay as well, which is apparently quite a liberal place, having been the first place in South America to legalise gay marriage (not that many people living there get married according to her) and also legalised cannabis. She also took us to the front, the theatre, the central squares, the cathedral (no churches are ever open as people aren't religious) and finished in their old port, all iron supported like a market hall.
My favourite story was about the metal fencing around an important old square. Apparently in the 18th century the town commissioned a man to build this. By the time he'd got back to Montevideo with his metal to build it, they'd run out of money to pay him. He said he'd build it anyway since he had the metal, and did... have a look at the shape of it in the pictures.
It was a really interesting tour, particularly as I didn't know much about Uruguay beforehand. We then went over to the parliament building in the afternoon, and had a tour of that. It was really interesting to learn more about their political system and history, and to see the inside of a parliament building. They also have guards with similar uniforms to the guards at Buckingham Palace!
Later we had a two minute workout in a nearby gym (to work off dinner lol) and walked through the new town to the hotel, before going out for dinner.
