We got an early bus and arrived in Montevideo late in the morning, ready to start exploring. However, we didn't know that in Uruguay nobody wants to work on a Sunday, so there was barely anything open to see! We found out later it's not for religion or anything, apparently they are 'just lazy'(!)
We were staying just near the central plaza de independência, which separates the old and new town, and houses the president's houses (old and new). We wondered around the old town to find some lunch, but sadly one of the only places open was McDonalds...
One burger and several chicken nuggets and fries later, we wandered around a bit more, and got a taxi to the far side of the coast, to walk back to our hotel along the rambla. When we got there there were loads of people doing the same thing, just walking and chilling on the rambla, and we discovered the next day we had inadvertently stumbled across one of the most popular activities for weekends in Montevideo.
Everyone was also drinking with metal straws out of strange wooden cups, clutching a thermos. Literally everyone. These are mate, the local tea, which everyone in Uruguay (and to a lesser extent in Argentina) is addicted to. We are determined to try it, although it just looks like a cup of dried Italian herbs. Tasty!
On our way back we saw yet another amazing sunset. Not tired of them yet!
