Rob was in charge of planning today so we started early and met a walking tour in plaza independencia. We got an early bus and arrived in Montevideo late in the morning, ready to start exploring. However, we didn't know that in Uruguay nobody wants to work on a Sunday, so there was barely anything open to see! We found out later it's not for religion or anything, apparently they are 'just lazy'(!)We were staying just near the central plaza de independência, which separates the old and new town, and houses the president's houses (old and new). ...

We literally spent the whole day chilling out, reading and eating, and chatting with a couple of Americans who arrived. It was lovely!!! The biggest surprise was cottage pie for dinner - apparently Uruguay was a British colony for a short time, although they think of it as a Uruguayan dish, most locals don't realise it came from us! Who knew?!

After breakfast we stocked up on TV shows for the next stage of our journey (no wifi at the next place!) and got the bus over to Valdense, where we were taken to our next stop, an estancia called El Galope in the middle of the Uruguayan countryside.It was beautiful and so secluded, surrounded only by farms. We left Buenos Aires first thing in the morning and headed over to the ferry port. We managed o get a lunchtime ferry with an hour crossing and crossed the river over to Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay. The tickets were massively overpriced as there was a football match in Uruguay the Argentinians were going to, but it was worth it to get the day crossing and spend the day in Colonia, an old Portuguese colonials coastal town. The posada was overpriced and ugly...
