We left Buenos Aires first thing in the morning and headed over to the ferry port. We managed o get a lunchtime ferry with an hour crossing and crossed the river over to Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay. The tickets were massively overpriced as there was a football match in Uruguay the Argentinians were going to, but it was worth it to get the day crossing and spend the day in Colonia, an old Portuguese colonials coastal town.
The posada was overpriced and ugly, so we went straight out and spent the afternoon wondering around beautiful Colonia. It was lovely, and we spent a few hours going from the old gate of the town along the old town and the coast. Later we walked up the beach for a while - it becomes the widest river in the world and you'd never know it wasn't the sea, apart from how dirty the water is. On the whole the old town was pretty but I think I still prefer Paraty, the colonial town on the Brazilian costa verde coast, as it was much more preserved and felt friendlier.
The place we went for dinner was amazing - a really cool bar/gastropub. It was only a year old and top of tripadvisor, and well deserved. The food and cocktails were gorgeous, all created by the owner, a girl who had moved from Venezuela for political reasons. All the food had a Venezuelan twist and we had lovely tapas and burritos as well as the cocktails, all for less than dinner at home. The cocktails in particular were gorgeous, definitely the best dinner in South America (so far...).
