Hello,
On monday morning three other girls and I went up into the canopies of two huge pines a fifteen min walk from the camp. It's called Canopy Access and it's the same company what BBC works with when shooting for Planet Earth and other nature programmes.
We were attached to two ropes and climbed the tree by standing up in a loop pulling the rope through a thing attached to the chest. It was amazing to climb through the different layers of the trees. The pines were about 50 m high which meens that we were above most of the surrounding trees. At the top everything became so much lighter and the wind quite strong. At the top we rested on the branches and took some pictures before we started going down. It's so cool to be able to lie on a branch 40 m up in a tree- that's what I call climbing a tree!
On the way down Cameron- the australien instructor- showed us a few tricks. We locked the ropes and pulled our legs up - face down and let go of the rope.My chest thing with some technical name was a bit lose so when I pulled my legs up and faced straight down it felt like I was going to lose balance and fall 40 m do my death! Cameron shouted at me to trust the equipment as he fumbled with my camera to take a picture. It took him ages and there I was, upsidedown hanging on for dear life, blood rushing to my face and he askes how I feel. "I'm s***ting myself" I screamed at the top of my lungs and then I got the giggles. One of the things that attached to the ropes had been caught in something as I changed possitions and suddenly decided to undo the tangled bit which lead to me dropping an inch (2,5 cm). Mind you an inch can feel like 10m as you are dangling 40 m up facing the spot where you would potentionally bore your head into the ground.
Going further down the rope became mor elastic allowing us to push ourselves out from the tree and onto other trees standing close. Another trick was to push out from the tree and spin around trying to time the spin avoiding coming back to the tree shoulder of back first. This was alot of fun!
I thought I was ok with heights but as the jelly in my legs remained for the rest of the day and my heart was beating faster when thinking about haning upside down, I think I proved myself wrong. It was a good experiance and I would definately do it again. Although this time I think I'll trust the equipment.
