Base Camp, Cusuco National Park- North West Honduras
Got to Honduras on Monday and spend a couple of days in San Pedro Sula. It was very hot and humid- according to the locals the hottest it has been for some time. No rules apply here and if you have a horn you will make sure everyone knows that you do. The noice was terrible.
The food in the city is very americanised and there's more fast food restaurants here than I have ever seen. Pizza Hut seems to be the most popular one. I've stayed away from seafood or meat and thought that eggs were the safest option.
We left San Pedro Sula at 7am this morning on a big yellow school bus. It took us through some remote villages before we were transfered onto smaller trucks. Me and five Canadian people were crammed onto the open space at the back of the car taking us 1,5h through the rainforest up the mountain. The grasshoppers are as big as birds and the air is fresh and tropical.
The base camp is not bad at all. There are some local people selling snacks and fizzy drinks including some home made pinaple pastry which are very nice. I live in a tent with two other girls- Amy and Leanne. The food is cooked by the local people and is quite nice. For luch we had nudle soup with white bread and a very hard green orange. The days start very early and it gets dark around 18- 19 and the sun goes down in a matter of minutes. It's only 15.40 but it feels like much later.
The weather is much cooler and the air fresher than down in the city and the evenings are said to be very cold. The variety of butterflies is amazing! I have seen some lizards as well but the biting insects are luckily few. All in all I'm so happy to be out here and I can't wait to get started.
Miss you all at home and wish you could be part of this!
Love Cecilia xxx
