We woke to calm winds, thank goodness. Bob and I were not looking forward to another day of "flying". The wind doesn't appear to affect Walt's rig as much as it does ours, lucky him. We had a furry helper this morning. A big blonde labrador. He switch off visiting Walt and Barb and Bob and me. I guess he like me best, because he came into our RV and wouldn't leave until I enticed him with a piece of Bob's homemade jerky.
We were on the road at 8am heading back to Texas. This time it was going to be the Texas Panhandle. It was going to be a straight shot down HWY 40 also known as Route 66. We stopped for gas before we got on the freeway and didn't stop for another two hours when we all needed a nature stop. We pulled off the freeway and planned to top off our fuel, too. uh oh...Bob realized he forgot to put the gas cap back on after fueling earlier. Last time he forgot it, it was only a 15 minute trip to retreive it. Not this time. Fubar for Bob.
We have driven almost 7K miles and the manual recommends that the tire pressure be checked and tires torqued every 5K miles. We were 2K miles overdue. Not to worry. Bob saw a tire shop as we were exiting the freeway and thought why not check to see if they could do it right away. While Walt and Barb waited for us, we drove to the shop. Fifteen minutes later, tires were checked, torqued, and Bob sweet talked the guy out of a gas cap all for $20.
It was fast approaching lunch time and we had leftovers from the night before so we looked for a rest stop. We stopped at the Rest Stop between mile 128 and 138. Not only was it a rest stop, it was also a mini educational stop about the Panhandle. Worthy of a stop to picnic and/or tinkle.
We continued on our way to the Oasis RV Park Resort in Amarillo TX. We arrived around 2:30pm and it was packed. We always call ahead or go online at least two days before to insure we have a place. Glad we did for this location. They were turning away folks without a reservation. This was a premo park...free popcorn, cookies and coffee...probably why it was so popular.
After we set up, we drove out to the Palo Duro Canyon. The Palo Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States only second to the Grand Canyon. It is not as deep as the Grand Canyon, but it is still magnificent. The multi-colored layers of rock were vibrant and dramatic. We drove down into the canyon. It has a different perspective up close and personal. Also, there is a RV Park at the bottom with water and electricity hook ups..if we had only known.
As we were heading back to the top, we were hailed by two young men. They had backed up too far getting out of the way of another car and ended up stuck in deep mud. The beast to the rescue! It took two tries, but the Beast got the truck out and to Walt's delight not a drop of mud dirtied the Beast.
We drove back to camp and got ready to go to dinner. We were going to the famous "Big Texan Steak Ranch & Brewery, home to the 72-oz steak", but we opted for a place closer to us, Hofbrau Steaks. Great steaks and ribs, but the homemade peach cobbler was the hit of the evening.
Tomorrow, we head to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
