We have been on the road for 31 days as of today. It doesnt' feel like it has been that long, but the miles tell it all. We have traveled 5588 miles, crossed 10 states, and visited 5 national parks so far with more to come.
Today, we started our return journey home with the Great Smoky Mountains being the turn around point. We left Greensboro GA heading north. We took the lead because we were still in the hunt for propane. We heard there was propane at Pilot Stations. So that was where we were heading, but we kept our eyes open for propane tanks at gas stations along the way. Just before we were to get on the HWY 85, I saw a tank at a convenience store just on the outskirts of Jefferson GA. We stopped. The propane nozzle was broken, but they gave us a name of Howlington Seed and Feed in Jefferson. I called to make sure they had a working propane pump. They sure did. We made the detour to Jefferson, a quaint little town, to the Seed Store. Bob had a great conversation with Dennis, the proprietor, covering politics and the military while Dennis pumped the propane. Bob could now stop worrying that his Dove Bars would melt.
We continued on our way. We stopped in Clayton for lunch. Walt had his sights on a Zaxbys Chicken, but there was no place to park the Beast and Testie so we drove across the street to an Italian Place, but it was not open. Walt thought we could just park and walk across the street...This "street" was a four lane byway, with no cross walk. We out voted Walt and said we would rather eat leftovers instead of being road kill. So we all had a quick bite in our rigs.
The drive to Cherokee NC was beautiful. Fall was definitely a comin'. Hints of orange, yellow, and reds trimmed the trees and shrubs along the road. Columns of smoke rose here and there among the trees. We were in for a spell of cold evenings.
We got separated from Walt and Barb, but we were both using Siri and knew we were close to the KOA. However, Siri took us the back way in. Actually, we were on the opposite side of the river. We could see the KOA on the other side. One problem, the road we were on was narrow and there was no place to turn around. We hoped there was a bridge that crossed over down the way. Sure enough there was.
This KOA was huge. One of the largest, but also one of the quietest. First things first after hook up...a dip in the pool for the boys. There were actually two pools on site. Unfortunately, the boys got yelled at. They went into the pool that was closed for the season. They were wondering why the water felt really cool.
The temperature was dropping, but we bundled up for a game of cards and dinner. For dinner, Bob and I rustled up a Harvest Chicken Salad. Grilled Chicken over a bed of lettuce sprinkled with cranberries and apples with a raspberry vinegarette salad dressing. We ate quickly and hurried to our warm and cozy rigs.
Tomorrow, a day exploring the Great Smokys and surrounding area.
