Touristas
5th July Seville is living up to its hot weather and we continue to see the sites. First up today was the Plaza de Torres (Bull Ring) which is just around the corner from where we are staying. They run 40 minute tours of the place including the museum. The ring itself isn't that interesting – there are 5 gates, in sequence for (a) Toreador and team (b) Bull In (alive), (c) Hospital, (d) McDonalds – at least, that’s where I think the dead bulls go and (e) Toreador out, but only if he’s done a really really good job – happens once in a blue moon apparently and he is carried out on the shoulders of the crowd. Next the museum, interesting facts and figures. Sadly if a bull ever kills a toreador then the bull and his mother must die because she gives the bull his personality and it prevents her from producing another fierce bull. It ain’t easy being a Spanish bull or bull mother …..
Following on from our tour of the Cathedral yesterday, our guide suggested we visit another church - Iglesia Del Salvador (Church of the Saviour) which is the finest baroque church in Europe. Depending on your point of view, it may also be the greatest example of kitsch in all of Europe. Well it was fabulous – had lots of WOW factor and totally over the top decorations. My photos don’t do it justice unfortunately.
Next we were off for our tour of the Alcazar. This Royal Palace is still in use and is a great example of Mudejar which is a mixture of Moorish and Christians architecture, the lace style of decoration and the tile work in the floors, walls and ceiling is just beautiful. We ventured into the gardens which could all do with a good layer of mulch as it was quite dry. There was a very detailed maze that we got lost in but it was a very enjoyable day.
