My Travels In America
Hi Everyone!
I'm sorry it's been so long since my last postcard...it's so hard to check emails and do everything you need to do in 15mins, which is our time limit cos there's always someone waiting to go on the internet after you.
The last couple of weeks have been fun and I've done a couple of new things.
Last session the Explorer village (my village) got to do Messy Olympics for the first time because it's normally an evening activity that the younger children do and it was one of the best things I've done all summer (even if I did end up being sick because of it!). Messy Olypics basically involves different races/games ivolving whipped cream, apple sauce, chocolate pudding, peanut butter and lots of other stuff that gets you extremely messy but Nick and I thought we would just skip the games and just get as much stuff on each other as possible...unfortunately my tummy didn't like all the stuff that I ended up covered in and I ended up being sick! Because it was such a sucess we ended up doing it again this session but I didn't want to be sick again so I had the job of ringing the bell to rotate around the games which kept me away from the mess and I put a poncho on to keep the stuff off my clothes. Unfortunately (as I expected), this drew attention to the fact that I diddn't want to get dirty and so all the male counselors chased me down and carried me into the middle of all the mess, pulled off my poncho and covered me with everything which was so funny. Luckily I held my nose and kept my mouth shut and managed not to get sick this time.
I also got the chance to go tubing last session which I've wanted to do all summer cos you basically sit in a big rubber ring and float down the river (and a few rapids) for 2 hours which is far more relaxing than baking on the stage all afternnon and 3 of my favourite campers of the summer came along to which made it even more fun.
Alice and Jemma, who are the horseback counselors, finally got an afternnon free and they were so sweet because they took a few of us on a horseback trail around camp and it made my week!!! And yes Siobhan, I did sing 'Home on the Range' , you would have loved it!!!
Our dance was also combined with 'Big/Little' Night last session, so we had all the kids together instead of seperate dances and the theme was 'Hollywood'. Everyones costumes were really good and we had a mini Hollywood sign next to the basketball court where the dance was being held. The kids all did handprints like Hollywood Blvd. and it was nice to have a dance with the Journey campers and counselors.
Over turnover a big group of us drove up to DC to see a baseball game and it was so much fun. One of the players scored a home run and all these fireworks went off and the atmosphere in the stadium was amazing! On the way home we wanted something to eat so we found this amazing 50s style diner and all of the international staff got really excited cos there were mini jukeboxes on the table and pink neon lights and the food was so good...and it happened to be open at 2am! We then had to drive back to camp and we didn't arrive back until 4.30am but it was worth being tired for the next day.
It also worked out well for me because I didn't have any kids this session which has been so much fun. It's definately fun having the kids here but it was nice just to have a session off. There were 4 cabins in Starlight that didn't have campers so we got to hang out together at night and watch films which was really nice because it's our last session all together because we have our staff banquet tomorrow night and then most of the staff leave that night or early Sunday morning cos they have school. There's only going to be about 19 counselors left in the whole camp, so the girls from Starlight are moving to Rainbow (the younger girls village) to be together. I'm really looking forward to moving back to Rainbow cos I lived there when I first got here and all the cabins are in one building (unlike Starlight where they are all split up), and they also have the Rainbow Centre Room which joins all the cabins in the middle so we're a lot closer together.
It's going to be weird because we will have had to say goodbye to pretty much all of staff the night before and then suddenly have kids the next day but luckily all my closest friends are going to be here next week.
I found out yesterday that I've also been made Head Counselor of Starlight for the final session (even though our current Head Counselor will still be here) so I'm really excited about that..I just hope I do a good job!!!
That's pretty much all the new stuff that's happened around here recently (oh apart from 4 counselors being fired last week for being drunk at camp!!!). I hope everyone is well! Thank you for all the emails keeping me up to date with what's happeing at home...I do appreciate them even though I don't always have the time to reply!
Again I'm sorry for the lack of photos...I was so close to being able to put some on the other day and then my laptop broke!!
Love you and miss you all
Cary
