Based upon what we had viewed/heard about in the connecting state capitals we had apparently high expectations of the Ohio State Capital because we were greatly disappointed. On the exterior it appeared that it was rough sawn concrete (we later found out it was limestone that was rough cut and quarried locally and it had fossils in it), little ornamentation, and little to no art/statues. Our disappointment continued once we entered. Upside, there was nothing but a quick peak in our purses from the security. The interior was laid out in such a manner it was difficult to navigate to start. The décor was less than pleasing. If I had walked into it not knowing, I would have said that it must have been in the process of being remodeled. There was less than a handful of art anywhere in the building and no statuary. The painting was plain and lacked any detail. In the rotunda (which disappointedly did not have a dome) there were large whitish panels that to us was calling out to have paintings or at least decoration on them. This was the feeling that we all had for the entire building. We unfortunately were not able to view the chambers of the Senate and House at all because they had them locked up tight for the day (it was open until 6 and we got there around 5 given the drive from Lansing to Columbus). We left feeling less than satisfied from this capital.
