1. We rise at 5.30 to catch a quick breakfast, fire up our headlamps and venture into the freezing night to conquer the last 500m between us and the summit by sunrise.
2. We make it slightly after sunrise which is just as well because it is difficult to stay long at the summit because of hurricane force wind and terrible cold.
3. We descend a different route to take the scenic Old Peak in (a huge crater). We get lost a little among the rough terrain and badly marked paths, on some slopes gale force wind almost makes us fall down and dad curses me and the conditions over and over again, him wearing lousy sneakers and shorts.
4. We finally make it the road over a giant field of lava rocks and find ourselves at a distance from our car (what we thought was 7km) so we start walking. Very few cars head in our direction and none of the seems to stop for hitchhikers.
Finally I get to a viewpoint where I can walk to some parked cars and asked the drivers directly. That works wonders. Two cars later (a French and a Swiss driver) and 15km down the road (!!!) we're driving again.
5. Enjoying the winding mountain roads we descend to the South Coast again. We are too tired to do anything touristy anymore. To our dismay hotel prices for 26th are exorbitant all over the island. The cheapest thing we find turns out to be an apartment at €130 rented out by a nice Belgian guy. We have some last tapas and go to sleep.
