Langkawi! Interesting place! First impressions were mixed. It was good to be away from Brunei for a break but not sure about Langkawi. It's very maylasian in that it looks like a deserted place but kind of quirky as well. The views are amazing even though it's very hazy. From our hotel you can see out across the bay to some of the 99 islands that make up Langkawi.
Today we have done our first tour. We went island hoping. This involved getting a boat out in to the bay. Our first stop was a nice little island beach where we could swim and sunbath however the downside for me were the monkeys! There were quite a few and people keep feeding them so they are not afraid to come right up to you. I don't really like monkeys so found this a little uncomfortable but at the same time it was nice to see them.
2nd stop was at another island where we stopped the boat in a cove and the driver threw some chicken in to the water and all of a sudden some giant eagles came swooping down from the sky. As much as I don't really agree with feeding wild animals in their habitat it was very cool to see them up so close!
Next stop was the lake of the pregnant lady. Apparently a young maiden fell in love and got pregnant but sadly the new born died 7 days later so she decided to bury it at the bottom of the lake so she could go there to remember her child. Legend has it that if a woman is having trouble conceiving her own child she should bath in the lake to help with her problems. The lake is actually made out of a collapsed cave which slowly filled up with rain water, which is why it is fresh water and not salt water even though it's so close to the sea.
To get to the lake we had to walk a bit through the jungle. It was like a national park so there were paths but alas more monkeys. But I survived! If you looked up at the rock formations you could make out the pregnant lady sleeping!!!
After this we decided to get a taxi from the hotel to the aqua park. This was a bit like sea world and there were lots of colourful fish as well as some penguins, sea lions and exotic birds.
Tomorrow we are off on a mangrove tour which includes a bat cave..........I think I'll stay in the boat for this!!!!!!!!! Tracey is also going to do an evening jungle walk - I'm gong to have a nice massage while she goes off for that hike!!! Lol
