Douglas Brown's Travels
Day 18 Another 8am start today for the 312km ride South East to Ljubljana.Todays ride will take us through Tauern `pass, Turracher Pass and Loibl Pass in the Austrian Alps. Temp will vary on todays ride from 10 degrees to 30 degrees with it getting warmer when we enter Slovinia. It was to prove to be our best days riding with a mixture of lazy open bends, high speed straights and twisty mountain passes. From Salzburg we headed to Hallein near the German border then on to Abtneau and Altenmarkt. Coffee stop was at a restaurant 1600 meters above sea level at Obertauern Pass. This is a popular skiing area and from our view at the restaurant we could see three ski lifts and several concrete avalanche barriers. Not many photo opportunities today as we had such a distance to cover. However, I ran the GoPro on the bike and will edit and share the footage when I get back to Aus. Continuing on through Tamsweg and Turracherhohe before lunch. Being a wonderful sunny Sunday the roads were full of motorcyclists as was every cafe. A fact that prevented us from eating at our planned lunch spot as it was full. We continued on for a kilometer and found an outside table at another cafe, surrounded by fellow motorcycle riders. After lunch it was on to Felkirchen and Klagenfurt before reaching the Slovenian border. Temperature had now risen and we removed as many layers as we could and opened the vents on or riding gear. The first time on this tour that I had felt really warm riding. The final run through Trzic and kranj went quickly as we used a couple of motorways and we arrived in Ljubljana at 3pm. We met for our final dinner at 7pm and walked to the city centre for our final meal as a full group. I would be glad of the inter tour rest days so that I could get back into a healthier eating pattern. Although I was averaging 5000 more steps per day than when I was at home, I still did not want to go near any scales. My Czech Hungary Tour was at an end. I had seen many new places, tasted many new foods and met a group of new friends.
