Douglas Brown's Travels
Day 3
After a very restless night's sleep I woke early to plan my day. The hotel has a shuttle bus that takes guests to town at 9am and brings them back at either 12 noon or 5:30pm. So it is off to the big smoke today.
First breakfast. I was the only non Japanese guest in the resturant as a tour party of approx 70 Japanese are staying at the hotel. They reinforced my memories of Japanese tourists I came across on earlier trips to Asia. They are rude and pushy. I got elbowed out of the way while trying to pick up a slice of bacon. Heaven forbid if I choose the very slice that they want from the foot high pile on the serving plate.
Headed to the city on the 9am shuttle and straight to the bookmakers address the hotel had given me. A rivet had fallen out of the cross over on my leather braces. The owner of the business was very helpful and fitted a new rivet for no charge.
Next stop was SIMobile to get a sim for my phone. 14 euro kfor 1000 units. ????
I have a dilemma. Walking around Ljubljana i find many wonderful sites that I saw on my previous visit. My dilemma is whether to take photos of sites that I already have photos of from my last visit. Ljubljana is such a mix of old and new and it all seems to fit together very well. I feel extremely comfortable in this city.
It is a warm day and all this walking around helped me develop a thirst. So I went looking for the little resturant by the river that we had lunch at in 2013. I am navigating the city well and find the resturant at the first attempt. Only to find that it is full of English football supporters sitting at a table six deep with empty beer bottles. So only a quick stop for a beer and an ice cream..
Then off to find the Ljubljana Museum. It is a large building divided into two parts History and Natural History. I did not take any photos inside except for. One exhibit which felt all wrong. The very arty and modern walk way dividers were not only confronting but they also stole the show from the exhibits. i could just hear the judges on "House Rules" saying that the exhibits were not the hero of the room. There is an hour walk from the museum following the line of the old wall around Emona the Roman settlement which originally sat on what is now part of Ljubljana.

However, my feet were getting sore and I decided to leave that for another day.
I walked back to the river bank and one of the many bars for a beer and Pizzella. While eating I got chatting to one of the locals who said they had called in extra police from the country areas for tomorrows football match. The football stadium only holds 2000 spectators and airline figures have it at just over 5000 English visitors who have flown in for the match. Most without pre- purchased tickets.
A large group of English supporters have just arrived at the bar next door to where I am eating lunch. I have never seen a more unsporty lot in all my life. Overweight with pot bellies ( both men and women). I think they would be candidates for a coronary if they had to dribble football more than a couple of meters.
There appear to be many more people on push bikes in the city centre than I remember last visit. They even have a hire bike system with bikes parked in racks along various streets and adjacent to each bike rack is what looks like a parking ticket machine where you pay for the use of the bike. I did not see anyone operating the machine so I am unsure if you pay before the bike is released or on return.
Next I set off to find a chemist to buy some sun screen. I could feel the sun on my nose and di not want to get burnt. My memory of where the chemist, Coral and I found last time, was not good so it took a few missed attempts before I found it. The chemist was adjacent to where the street 3 on 3 basketball tournament was being held so I found a shady spot, took my boots off and watched for an hour.
Taxied back to my hotel at 4:30pm and relaxed sorting the days photos before heading to the same resturant as last night for dinner.
The resturant owner once again said don't look at the menu I know what you will like. With last nights success I did not hesitate in saying yes. I also told him that I wanted the same beer I had last night and he replied that it was rated number eleven in the world. Sarajevsko Premium, I wonder if we can find it in Aus.
Tonights surprise was a steaming hot clay pot of Bosnian goulash. It was delicious and the accompanying flat bead left me just over content. He had done it again. He suggested I finish my meal with a Bosnian coffee.
Too help offset the calorie intake for the day, my fitness device told me that I took 12663 steps, walked 10.32km, climbed 32 meters and burned 2755 calories.
