What's a birthday in Toronto like...
Firstly a birthday on a Saturday in summer, not a lot can happen to make this day bad. And I was lucky enough for it to just keep on getting better.
After a wee sleep in we tramp down to the Bohemian Queen Street West to do some browsing through the eclectic local designer shops. After around 2 hours of this Aidan thinks that shopping is over. No way not with no purchases made yet. So we head a little east to reach the end of Queen Street that is a little more in my budget to pick up a few b'day purchases. Not to mention a funky shirt for Aidan.
By 3.00 we are a little weary, hungry and hot (I think the temp gauge got to around 27 degrees). After a light lunch and a well needed glass of chilled wine we head off to just a couple more shops before heading home.
Just to add to my afternoon lightheadedness Aidan mixes up a wonderful cosmopolitan.
Early evening we head downtown again in our best rags - no-one would ever guess we were backpackers. Push our way through the 'ordinary' tourists lining up to visit the CN Tower and get VIP service by being escorted straight to the front of the line because we have a reservation at the very classy 360 Restaurant at the top of the CN Tower (courtesy of the Davis clan - thank you).
Let me just digress for a moment. The CN Tower is Toronto's city icon. The tallest free-standing structure in the world - or something like that. The 360 restaurant is a revolving restaurant right at the top, obviously showcasing a spectacular view of Toronto. (See the big spire in the pic attached to this postcard)!
We had a fantastic time. Great food, beautiful wine (courtesy of the Waters - thank you) and all in all a great night. 4 hours later we leave the restaurant and head down to the observation deck where we get very queasy in the stomach at the thought of walking over the glass bottom deck!
Next day is slow going, just as all Sunday's should be. In the afternoon, we sit in a beer garden (or patio as it is more likely to be called here) to enjoy some wine with some friends.
Birthday ain't over yet. I receive b'day mail surprises every day of the week. Then on the following Monday we go see the Finn Brothers (courtesy of Aidan - thank you). They are playing at Massey Hall. A gorgeous old theatre with three levels of seating (we are on the ground right in front of the band - fab seats. And great acoustics at the venue.
Well the opening number or shall I saw the opening chords brought an instant lump to my throat, bringing back so many memories of home with the tunes and the accents. What a wonderful night.
All in all - my 29th birthday in Toronto rocked!!
