We had breakfast and chilled in our room for this morning, we were told a taxi would pick us up at 8.00pm this evening to take us to the train station. So we thought we'd ask if we could get a late check out, we managed to get the room until 5.00pm, so we thought we'd make use of the time and organise our bags a little better and chill out because I can't imagine we'll get a great nights sleep tonight. We checked out of our room at 5.00pm, left our bags at the hotel to go out for something to eat, we were told to come back around half 7 to be in time for the taxi. We had something to eat and got drinks and snacks for the train. On coming back the guy at the hotel gave us our tickets and said the taxi would now be picking us up at 9.30. We were confused as to how this had changed so quickly. Our tickets said that the train would leave at 10.35pm and get into Sapa around 8.00am. This was fine we would just have to wait, the problem was the journey back from Sapa to Hanoi. The train was coming back at 10.10pm which would mean the train got in at around 7.30am from there it would be an hour drive to the airport and get checked in. This would only just be enough time but if there were any delays on any part we would miss our flight. We said this to the guy and all he could say was "don't worry" he said to us the train would get in at 6.30am, then a little later he said 7.00am. He kept changing the times obviously knowing it was too late for us and we had booked this with 5.30am to 6.00am in mind. We were then worrying about what to do, we decided to go with it anyway and see what happens in Sapa. At 9.30pm we were expecting a taxi to pick us up but what happened was at 9.30pm the guy from the hotel went out to flag one down. This took a good 10-15 minutes. After getting in the taxi we were soon in a traffic jam, the 8th March as well as being Amy's birthday is Women's day here in Vietnam. This meant that EVERYONE seemed to be out tonight in cars and on scooters. It seemed to take forever to get out of the jam and felt like it would have been quicker to walk but at 10.15pm we got to the train station. We swapped our paper tickets for proper tickets and went to find our carriage on the train. We had got hard beds because the soft beds had sold out but we thought they would be very similar to what we had in India. The train wasn't as wide as an Indian train and it had rooms closed off by doors which had six beds in. Our numbers meant one of us was on the top of a row of three and one would be on the bottom. When we got in there were two Japanese guys in there, one on the top of the other row and one in the middle of the row James and I would be on. The guy in the middle very kindly offered to swap and go on the top, it made it easier anyway for him to talk to his friend. Once we got settled two Vietnamese guys came in and took the other two beds. Our stop is Lao Cai which is the very last stop so no worries about sleeping in. One of the Vietnamese guys started to play angry birds on his phone with the volume on and was happily singing to himself so at this point James and I put our headphones in and laid back on our beds!
