We got up really early this morning to get the last bits of packing and organising done, we had cereal then got set off. We wanted to get to the petrol station first to get a few last bits. We had to be at the crossing for 8.00am to get the ferry which leaves for Fraser Island at 8.30am. We made it in time, the ferry was only small with enough space for 5/6 cars. The car had to be reversed onto the ferry (I'm glad James was driving) it only took around half an hour to cross then we could drive off. We drove off the ferry then the first job was to change the settings on the front tyres to 4WD before driving any further as it's sand straight away. The drive was a little like being on a ride at a theme park, I had to hold onto a handle which was on the front of the glove box while we were going over the bumps. Our first stop was a place called Central Station where we did a rainforest walk and had a drive around to look at Lake Mckenzie which was beautiful. We then had a drive to the little town on the island where 4WD had to be turned off through the town then back on before you went into the beach. Our itinerary had said to drive quite far up the beach to a campsite and get there for around 4.00pm. As we're driving on the beach we had to be aware of tide times so that we didn't get caught out. We got onto the beach around 2.00pm which should give us just enough time to reach our camp. Beach driving was absolutely awesome, we were not allowed to drive the car through any salt water which was extremely difficult. It was so open with a huge expanse of beach in front of us and the sea out to our right. We had to in part of the journey exit the beach up and off and drive over some rocks then drive over more. We drove past some beautiful sand pinnicles with different coloured sand and drove past a shipwreck 'The Macheno' which looked really cool. We also had to drive over a big creek called 'Eli Creek' which had fast flowing water and high edges to get down and back up again. We found our campsite, got a spot and got on with making some tea. There were warning signs all over the island about being 'Dingo safe' as they can be quite dangerous. So we made sure after cooking we cleared up really well, leaving no trace for a curious dingo. It was around 6.00pm after clearing up from tea and it had got pretty dark, we were both pretty tired though so we just took the opportunity to get an early night.
