Brie & Trent's Travels
It has been a crazy past few days. Cinque Terre was amazing even though we didn't get to see everything we had planned to because of the train strike. Who strikes for one day? Anyways it was still nice roaming around at sunset, and I had the best pesto I will probably ever have for dinner the second night. Yesterday when we left was one wild time. Got up at 5:30 a.m. to catch our train, which we didn't even really need to do because our flight ended up being two hours later than we thought it was. Oh well. It was ok though because during our extended wait in the train station (because our first one got delayed and we missed our ride) we realized that even though our flight said it was out of Milan, it was really out of a town called Bergamo which is an hour away from Milan by train. We kind of freaked out for a minute when neither of our guidebooks had that town in them at all, until we found out that we could take a train there. Good thing we had scheduled an extra hour to take the train from Milan to the Milan airport (15 bucks, still weird to me).
Anyways, we made it to Bratislava ok after our plane got delayed an hour...we probably should have gone straight to Vienna. It's an odd place to find yourself in when you are woken up after two hours of sleep to the incessant sound of a spray can and what smells like chemical smoke. Even odder when you find out that the French girl in the bunk next to you is trying to kill "bugs". I assumed that meant mosquitoes until I went to the bathroom to breathe some clean air for a while and one of our roommates showed me his legs, ravaged by bed bug bites. Sure enough, I looked at my bed and saw a few dark black bugs crawling around. Totally disgusting. After about half an hour of contemplating the floor versus the corner versus the bed, I threw an extra sheet on top and went for it. I only got a few bites and it was worth it for a decent night's sleep. It was kind of funny checking into our hostel today in Vienna only to see two Bratislava hostel mates and compare our night wounds.
So far, Austria is great. It is like a new world here, and definitely the best hostel we've stayed in so far. It's cheap, super clean and new, and the staff is extremely nice and helpful. unfortunately the museums are closed tomorrow, but I think it will be fine just roaming around. Looking forward to streudel and sausage. Hope you are all doing well. Heard it was 99 in San Diego yesterday....wow. I guess I can't complain about the heat too much any more. We're gearing up for the last, extreme leg of our tour when we'll do five countries in about a week. Exciting stuff. Wish us a better Eastern Europe visit with Budapest.
