As the sun sets on our last night in Scotland, it’s impossible not to reflect on the amazing time we have had here. Mountains, lochs, cycling and midges being the main highlights. We have done and seen so much whilst here and yet have only scratched the surface.
We woke to a glorious blue sky. Andy made us a full Scottish breakfast, complete with haggis and something that looked suspiciously like corned beef to commemorate our last day in Scotland (and because he wanted to have at least one fry up whilst we were here). With bellies full, we squeezed into our wetsuits and headed to the water for our hired paddle boards.
None of us have done Stand Up paddle boarding before but it was pretty easy to master, especially on a windless day on a calm lake. Looking up at the mountains from the tranquil waters was wonderful and the whole experience was really relaxing. Elizabeth and I shared a board and she enjoyed dipping her toes in as we glided along. She had a go with my paddle (which of course was too big) and is now adamant that she’s going to have her own board next time. By the end, everyone was in the water, the kids loving the buoyancy of their life vests.
After a bit of downtime and a spot of lunch back on the bus, we headed out for a bike ride around the lake. There was a fabulous trail circumventing the lake which though rocky was great for cycling on and even Elizabeth made it round with very little assistance. It was so enjoyable that we wished it was longer than 6km. Not enjoyable enough for the kids to want to do another lap though.
The kids had hoped to have time to swim in the lake again but sadly the weather had other ideas. Once we saw the incoming shower move across the mountains, we headed back to the bus and once again hid from the rain listening to Harry Potter.
We had supper in the local ski bar. The bar was really cool and decorated with ski paraphernalia. Ski runs in the area seem to mostly be blue and red runs but as none of us ski, it’s of little consequence.
