Dear Diary,
Hi. How are you? I'm fine. We've had two fantastic action-packed days here in Cape Town, but I shall start at the beginning.
We arrived on Thursday evening after an uneventful flight, picked up our Mr Bean car and proceeded to drive around and around the car park looking for an exit, all the while mocked by our GPS either saying "recalculating" or directing us the wrong way down a one-way. Eventually we made our way out and the GPS did a much better job getting us to Angus (who I met at UCT) and Lauren's house.
Chris (who I also met at UCT) was around for a braai that night and despite being teased for my Kiwi accent, we had a great time. I learnt a few interesting things from Chris about protests in South Africa, including:
- -People burning down trains to protest against the lack of trains
- -People burning down classrooms to protest against the lack of classrooms
- -Rubbish collectors emptying the rubbish onto the roads during a strike, not thinking when they get back to work they would be the ones working harder to clean it up
- -Taxi drivers protesting against tougher penalties for driving offences, claiming they'd all lose their licenses (instead of thinking they should drive better)
On Friday morning, Angus, Lauren, Rebecca and I went out for a yummy breakfast in a little complex in Noordhoek with lots of Cape Dutch style buildings. We then went to Simon's Town for a walk and continued onto Boulders Beach where we saw the famous penguin colony. If you have a look at the photos, you'll see one of the signs leading into the protected area saying in picture form "no vuvuzelas". Who thinks that's a reasonable thing to bring along to a nature walk or a picnic on the beach?! On second thoughts, the logic behind the protests above may indicate the sign is there for a reason.
We drove through Table Mountain National Park to get to Cape Point and had a nice walk up to the lighthouse where there were some stunning views. After lunch I took Rebecca for a tour of the university where I studied. It was just as pretty as I remembered it and it had a couple of new buildings too.
We finished the day off with a fantastic meal and game of Settlers of Catan, and for a first attempt by Rebecca and me, we didn't do too badly.
We'll fill you in on the second action-packed day tomorrow.
Good night Diary.
- Brett
P.S. We've sorted out the photo ordering.

Michelle awesome post, Brett. Good to learn for the future that vuvuzelas aren't welcome at all places.
