Since arriving in Turkey the sailing has been one part we've been really looking forward to and really excited about.
We walked down to the marina at 10am so that we could get to meet our boat crew and our fellow travellers for the next four days. The boat itself was very similar to the one from Croatia last year with the exception being that this was a non guided tour. After settling in we sailed out of the harbour around 12pm and stopped for a swim before lunch. As we pulled up in the bay we were greeted by a Turkish man and lady making gozleme's on a little boat so we bought a banana and choc one which went down a treat!!
After a swim and a huge lunch we cruised again for a bit meeting and chatting to our fellow sailors on board. After a bit more swimming we continued on our journey to St Nicholas island for a bit of a hike through the ruins to watch the beautiful sunset. The island was named after saint Nicholas (Santa claus) because he lived there for a number of years, the island also contained five churches on the way to the summit. After taking some more amazing sunset photos it was time to head back to the boat for dinner. The meal was fresh fish, which everyone knows that I (Brett) really love seafood....(NOT)! After making sure the crew were aware I don't eat fish I had hoped that they were maybe cooking me some chicken or something but when they finished serving everyone their fish I came to the realization that my dinner was a vegetarian option with only sides :(
Day two of our boat trip started with an early trip out to our destination at 5am. We all slept on deck as our cabins were too hot to sleep in, and with the 5am engine start and the rocky windy cruise along we were all feeling a little sea sick by the time we arrived at our bay for breaky. Arriving in at 10am we had breakfast and dived straight into the water where we swam and snorkeled for a few hours in the beautiful turquoise ocean (the Aegean water is where the colour turquoise came from).
After another lunch we sailed to a little coastal town called Kas where we strolled the cute streets and where Bec bought some hand made silver rings. We were told this town was known for the silver jewelry and after she held off buying anything on this trip she finally found exactly what she was looking for! After a couple of hours in Kas we boarded and sailed out to a little bay for the night where we swam in search of turtles that kept popping their heads up. The evening was spent chilling out with a nice meal and chatting about US reality TV shows as majority of our fellow sailers were American.
Our last full day we were woken up by a barking dog bright and early before another buffet breaky and an early morning swim to freshen up. Next up we made our way along the coastline to the area of the sunken city. The sunken city itself was not quite as impressive as I had imagined it to be. Afterwards we sailed to Kekova where we were able to go to a nice little cafe on the water with the first bit of wifi in days. Kekova was a pretty little island, that had a small castle as well as being littered with old tombs.
Our last stop for the day was in Smugglers bay which had to be the most scenic from all the bays we had been to. When we were swimming we even had a large turtle come past us and as we had our snorkelling equipment on we dived down to see it but Bec freaked out as the turtle apparently came at her....We all thought he was probably coming up for a look to check us out but of course she scared the s**t out of it and it swam off - cheers for that Bec.
That night was party night at the Smugglers Inn which we found out that our captain had a hand in opening....He told us how twenty years ago he and a friend used to be people Smugglers taking people from Turkey to Rhodes in Greece for $10,000 a ride but one day his friend went out for a 'delivery' and didn't come back for two years as he got arrested. When he was released his friend opened the Smugglers Inn (whether the story was true or not who knows but I liked it). We had a great night partying with ours and another boatload to some awesome music. It was a big night and so much fun, definitely a great way to end our time on the boat!
