A 4:15am wake up call is never fun but it's ok if it's for a flight down to Athens to begin the last part of our Europe leg in Greece then continuing onto Turkey!
We arrived into Athens mid morning and made our way to the hostel which was relatively easy. Upon arriving we decided to organize our tickets for our ferry to Santorini in the morning and after being told the ticket shop would be closed to then being told it was open, we decided not to take any chances and jumped on the metro and head down to the port.
When heading out to get the metro we started to understand why everyone calls this a crappy city (seeing drug deals in exchange for shoes), the area we stayed in was quite nice though. After picking up our tickets from the port area we went straight back to our happier surroundings for a little bit of exploring and a traditional greek dinner.
It was another early morning wake up call (5am) to catch our ferry to Santorini. The ferry ride started out fine (allocated seating, cheap breakfast) until we left the harbour. I never thought I got sea sick but my god I was close on this trip. There were people being sick all around us as the boat went through the rough windy conditions. Every time we came to a stop at a port I kept begging for it to be ours. After 6 hours we finally arrived (without vommiting) to beautiful Santorini.
The owner of the hotel were were staying at picked us up at the port and took us to his perfect little hotel. The hotel is run by him and his family and it was really nice with a pool and a 1min walk to the black sand beach. After checking in we strolled down to the beach for some of these gyros that everyone always talks about and they were amazing (the chips even had chicken salt!). Afterwards to cool off we jumped into the water and had a lazy afternoon on some sunbeads that we hired, there is nothing like a bit of R&R!
That evening we enjoyed dinner at a restaurant on the beach and attempted to be bit healtier by just getting the mixed grill for two with a Greek salad which was bloody good. After dinner we found a bar so that I could watch the football (Man u vs Everton and Everton won,) all in all it was a great first day on this beautiful island!
