In the end our overnight sleeper train to Berlin wasn't as bad as we thought it would be! After negotiating our dodgy train man down from €60 to €20 for an upgrade we ended up getting our own cabin with a four pack of beers included, we were cheering!
Arriving into a wet and miserable Berlin we spent the day doing chores including a trip to the laundromat, this in itself was quite a stressful experience! All the signs were in German and being in a non English speaking part of town this was not fun, needless to say we were glad to walk out of there 3 hrs later even if we were €15 poorer!
Day 12 started with a trip into the middle of Berlin where we went for a nice long walk (3km to be exact as Brett misread a sign) before meeting up for our walking tour. There was one hell of a storm while we were having lunch so it ended up all being in good time before our tour started (as we were running late to begin with).
The walking tour was excellent!!! One of the best we've done! We saw the holocaust memorial site in the centre of Berlin which is so well done! It's designed to blend into the city and for people to explore it how they please. We also saw a part of the wall separating east and west Berlin and saw the final known location of Hitler, which is now just a carpark with what very little is left of his bunker underneath. All in all it was one fantastic history lesson! One thing that we noticed is how Berlin is still under so much construction and is still recovering from WWII, it will be great to return in 10yrs time to see how much further it develops to the point where its a large completed city like London and Paris - we'll just have to come back!
The evening was spent cooking a meal, drinking beers and playing cards with some fellow hostellians.
