Day 28
It's our last full day in San Francisco today so we decide to pack as much in as possible. We started with breakfast at Pier 39 before jumping on an open top bus that took us on a two hour tour around all the sites and sights of San Fran. It's a great way to see the city and we saw far more than we would if we had tried to do it on our own. We went out to the park which is entirely manmade, even the soil had to be brought in, we saw the Coit Tower, the Town Hall and the Golden Gate Bridge before making our way back through the Presidio district to the Wharf. Without stopping for one minute, we made our way down to Pier 33 where we got on a ferry that took us out to Alcatraz Island and the prison. It is really spooky when you get off at the dock and see the buildings rising above you up and up until you get to the actual prison blocks at the top. We walked up and managed to get onto an audio tour where they give you a tape machine that, as you walk around, tells the story of the prison spoken by the prisoners and guards that were actually there. When we finished our tour we jumped back on the ferry to the mainland with just enough time to spare before our rendezvous at Union Square. We caught a tram to the Square from the Wharf as these are a great and cheap way of getting around the city. All of the trams are from different countries and are really old, I like the trams they are cool. We get to Union Square in time to watch the band and have a great time, we meet up with Pete and Jeanette and I get a signed poster of all the people in the band which was pretty cool. Unfortunately we have to say our goodbyes, promising to keep in touch when we get back to England. We are all really pleased to have met Pete and his family and are sad that we have only had such a short time here with them however, it is a brilliant excuse to come back another time! We stop in a great restaurant just off Union Square before catching a cable car back down to Fisherman's Wharf.
