Day 27
Today we had planned on a short ride into San Fran (about 60 miles) back to the hire company where we would drop our RV off and make our way down to the Argonaut Hotel in Fisherman's Wharf where we were to stay for the next two nights. How wrong could we have been, the journey started by taking us down Highway 1 (really craggy and winding road right on the cliff edges) in thick early morning mist, normally Mum would be telling Chris that the lights were red or the car in front was braking but this morning she was so terrified that she didn't say a single word for the first 15 miles of our journey. I decided that I was going to sit in the front with Chris this morning so I guess I probably did Mum a favour! Following the road all the way down to the Golden Gate Bridge we were disappointed to only see about the first thirty feet of it as the rest was shrouded in thick sea mist, Alcatraz and the City were nowhere to be seen. Things took a turn for the worse here as we managed to get lost ending up in Downtown San Fran in a 30 foot RV, Chris got a bit stressed but Mum found a way back out towards the hire company. We got back with just enough time to empty all our gear out of the van and into the shuttle bus waiting to take us to our hotel. After checking in we went for a walk along Fisherman's Wharf and stopped for a bite to eat at one of the many cafes before heading to the famous Pier 39 where we looked in all of the shops to kill some time before we had to get ready to go out for dinner at Uncle Pete's house.
Dinner this evening was really nice, we went to Pete's house in San Rafael and met his wife, daughter and son-in-law. We had a great time, talking about our time in America, family in England and lots of stuff in between.Jeanette, Pete's wife, asked us if we would like to meet them the following evening in Union Square as the band that Pete plays in were staging a free gig, this sounded like a great idea and we agreed before heading back to the hotel for the night.
