As we approached the waterfront for Venezia it was difficult to take it all for real. In front of us the prison where they housed Casanova, the Bridge of Sighs, Piazza San Marco, that insane facade on the basilica, or chapel? The sun was out lighting the whole place up like a movie set.
We strolled for an hour, took in a glass blowing exhibition (Max couldn't be convinced to skip it) before some more strolling, shopping, then we settled into the Piazza for an hour or so. Excellent expresso, birra, warm sunshine and a live orchestra made that sunshine all the more intoxicating.
At this stage Max was suffering, and I mean suffering, a 24hour technology ban. As we passed the pillar of death he heard the story about the king offering certain death or freedom to a handful of inmates from the prison that neighbours the Doge's palace. Instantly he wanted to apply that to his predicament, double or nothing on the ban if he could get around the pillar of death just like prisoners from 800 years ago. Emerson wanted to earn Lemonade credit by doing the same thing. I figured there was no way either cold get their hands around the pillar to support themselves and took the action. I forgot they have tiny feet! Both got around the pillar without touching :(
Next we took a Gondola ride through the canals, Max heard Gab and I talking about the Bridge of Sighs and kissed his sister as we passed through.
A beautiful afternoon I'll never forget.
