A bleary eyed start today, but we're off to the Alps, to Innsbruck! First stop though is Munich, too late to see the glockenspiel play, the sun came out to greet us though with a thoroughly beautiful day for walking around the city.
The Town hall rivals Koln cathedral for impressive germanic architecture, but the Glockenspiel looks like it would be amazing to watch play. We spent most of the time in the main plaza and the markets around he corner. Wine, spirits, breads, meats all for sale here. I had the wiener wurst with the sweeter mustard I've ever had. Pretzels are way better here that what we found in Frankfurt. If you're hoping to see the end of Sydney olympic merchandise, don't hold your breath, there are still Munich'72 stores here! We glimpsed the Olympic site, and the BMW world on the way out of town.
The Alps! Snow! already breathtaking through a bus window, once we got to Innsbruck it was one of those things we won't forget. We took a horse and carriage ride around the town, walked the tiny little streets, got two caricatures done of Gab & I and Max & Emerson, in the street. When looking at the artist, we were looking past the "Golden Roof" an on up into the mountains to the snow. We found a schnapps house not very traditional looking, they have candy store like tubes on schnapps of all flavours, you take a sample, order a bottle and they fill it up right in front of you. I've had a bottle of raspberry and half of my cherry schnapps while I sit here tonight!
The architecture is beautiful, I know nothing of the place, but Gab was telling me all about the mad queen, slept with her husband's corpse for 3 years after he died, the palace here is gorgeous with that alpine backdrop, and we dropped into the Sacher hotel, where the Sachertorte comes from.
We found the schnitzel house renowned for the best Austrian fair and headed in. Delicious! and with cranberry sauce!
After dinner we went to a traditional trioli dance and music show, this is the whole lederhausen, jumping and slapping deal. I videoed the whole thing because I couldn't stop, they were having so much fun it lit the rest of us up. The kids had an absolute ball, the wood chop dance and the Miner dance were the favs.
