It climbed to 38c today, I know because Gab was giving us updates every time we paused to draw breath. Shattered from our massive drive yesterday, we almost missed breakfast arriving just in time to upset the staff who were convinced the ordeal was over for another day. Fed we headed slowly to the town centre. We stopped for refreshments every 3-5 minutes - Merde il fait chaud!
We went looking for the produce markets - blessed as we were it was way beyond our expectations - an indoor, airconditioned market of everything you could hope to see in provence - wonderful! We had Deviled Eggs (Al you were right about their come back), pain, fromage, quiche, and too many cakes. We wandered around for an hour - even getting to see a group of younge kids on a cooking tour, first selecting their produce, then later in the kitchen working on the tarte citron.
Outside in the square we stopped to enjoy all of our shopping - brunch was delicious! A coffee in a cafe in the square was eventually followed by a long slow stroll to the Palais des Papes. This city was established over 4000 years ago - imagine what Sydney will look like in another 3800 years? Tiny Venician streets collide and dissect themselves throughout the city, Towered over by great leaning edifaces of the last 5-6 centuries. Whilst the Genovese version of this era is today littered with weeds and the refuse of modern life - somehow here in Avignon the city has stuck religously to the corporate colour scheme and behavioural decrees that ensure almost every turn is a new postcard. The ediface isn't fake - it's genuine construction of the past millennia, but it all looks disconcertingly pristine.
Looking this pretty makes for photos and slow sipping hour opportunities at every turn. We took a carriage train ride around the city centre to learn more about the history of the place - hard to consume when every second thought was of the pool at home. We returned to the town square for a light summer lunch before heading off to stroll again. All up we've clocked up 19k steps today, it's that magical a place you couldn't say we really noticed it over the heat of the city.
We took a slow hour or two to make our way back to the hotel, where we sat for a picnic in the hotel garden. It's still well over 34c at 8pm, the assault on the boulangerie is nearly at conclusion - every person at the table is depleted ready for an ice shower and an air conditioned drift into the sweet peace.
