Brenton Kovacs's Travels
15/12
Today we drove the 160kms each way to stand on the famous Bonneville Salt lake. There is so much history here if you are into speed. The drive was a little boring as the scenery was not that interesting. Plus the weather was very overcast with low cloud and a smog cloud. Decided not to drive on the salt, as it would be quite easy to get bogged, and we are miles from anywhere. Anyway we can now say we have visited the Bonneville salt flats.

Spent the day visiting a few of the local tourist attractions, nothing to get excited about. Salt Lake City is a mining and industrial town, so there is a lot of air pollution, and you can certainly smell it in the air.

The day started off very cloudy, so we thought the drive to Jackson will be without any scenery. As we stared to drive up the mountains we reached the top of the cloud layer, and were meet with brilliant blue sky. The views we across the top of the mountain range was stunning. We stopped at a lookout where we were looking down onto the top of the clouds. The snow covered mountain peaks in the distance were amazing.
Some of the drive was through a deep valley following a river. No sunlight, freezing temperatures, icy roads meant we drove very very cautiously. The roads we have been taking are not the main highways, but the lesser traveled state roads. A lot more scenic. Arrived in Jackson late in the afternoon. Today was a very memorable drive.

After a hearty breakfast we drove to the town square and walked around till the cold forced us back to the car. It was about minus 15c. The air is so cold your lips and cheeks sting. It was very foggy to start with, but by lunch time we had beautiful blue sky.
The drive to Grand Tetons National Park was short, about 12 ks away. On the way we stopped to see all the Elk at the National Elk Refugee. The Tetons Mountains are a pretty impressive sight. Stopped in the park so we could walk on a frozen river. The ice was very thick, so no chance of getting wet.
Spotted a Bald Eagle perched on a tree. Alan managed to get a picture before a passing car scared him off. Just around the corner was a wild herd of Bison. The only animals we haven't seen in the wild is Bear and Wolf. Hopefully in the next few days.
The sun still packs a punch, even when its freezing. It so nice to feel the suns rays warming your semi frozen face. Everybody is complaining up here about the lack of snow. Most places around here should have already received 3 to 4 metres of snow, but they have been lucky to get half a metre so far.
