Brenton Kovacs's Travels

Spent the last few days in Breckenridge sightseeing. Took the free gondola ride to the ski slopes, but not much of a view for any good pictures. Breckenridge, along with Vail etc are like ghost towns. There are just no tourist's. Could be the lack of good snow, or the GFC. Some shops don't even open till noon, and are closed by 5pm

The drive to Moab is about 5 hours. The first 4 hours on the I 70 highway was a little boring. We turned off the highway and headed to Moab via a back road. Well this was a great idea. The road followed the mighty Colorado River for the next 100ks. Slow going, but the views were amazing. Huge Mesa and Buttes and stunning rock formations made the drive take twice as long, always stopping to take pictures.
We had time to visit Arches National Park before sunset, but only just. Sunset is 4.45pm. We did get to see most of the Arches.
The hotel we are staying in, the AArchway Inn is not to bad for $60 a night including breakfast. The breakfast is not what you call very appetizing. The main thing is that we slept well.

Well we have seen some pretty interesting places, but nothing comes close to Canyonlands National Park. We spent the whole day in this park, and still did not see everything.
The scenery and the views were nothing short of breathtaking. We were only 5,000 feet above sea level, the temperature was just below freezing, and occasionally light snow was falling. So it was rather cold, but luckily the wind held off, or the wind chill factor would have kept us in the car.
The best part of visiting the National parks at this time of the year is there is nobody else here. We had the place to ourselves except for about 3 other car loads of people. The Ranger was telling us that Arches NP gets so busy in summer, that it is impossible to get a park, so you don't get to see the sights. The NP are thinking of closing the park to car, and run a shuttle service.
Tomorrow we head south to Sedona, Arizona, about a 6 our drive. The route we have chosen takes us through Monument Valley. Monument Valley is home to the Navajo Indian Tribe. The valley is surrounded by Mesa and Buttes, can't wait to see them. A lot of Western movies were shot here including the John Wayne movies.
Canyonland NP was only opened back in 1964, otherwise the whole area was to be mined for uranium, oil and gas. Luckily the National Parks managed to kick the mining companies out!
