Brenton Kovacs's Travels
12/1/2011
Today we wake to blue skies and a cool 15 degrees. After a nice breakfast we drive to a place called Jerash. Its about 40ks north of Amman, and it took about 1 hour. The traffic here is shocking. Jerash has the largest most preserved Roman buildings in the world. The admission fees are reasonable this time, about $11AU each. The town of Jerash is a lot cleaner than Amman, with lot of trees and greenery making it far more appealing.
This place is truly amazing. Some of the building are so nearly complete. You walk down the original Roman stoned road from Hadrians Arch to the end, about 1.5ks. This takes us 2 hours to walk and see all the impressive sites.
Now we drive to a place called Al-Salt. This turns out to be a waste of time and petrol. Nothing to see here. We drive back to Amman and fight our way through the traffic. Spent the rest of the day in the hotel lounge.
The buffet dinner put on by the hotel is really good. Not a lot of selections, but what is there is very tasty. Tomorrow will be a waste of a day transiting to airport and onto Bangkok.

Another nice day so far. Rang Adrya while having breakfast. Good to here she is ok, pity about the flooding in QLD. The drive to the airport according to the GPS is 30ks, 40 minutes. So we give ourselves plenty of time to get there, just in case. Well the city is in grid-lock. It takes nearly an hour to drive 10ks. My patience is tested here. We finally arrive at the airport after 1.5 hours. We only managed to count about 5 near misses.
I am so glad to be at the airport after returning the Avis hire car with no damage. Lost count of the number of times we had to take evasive action to avoid being hit or hitting some-one or something. Even the pedestrians are quite happy to just walk straight out in front of you without looking. They just don't seem to care. Honking the horn does nothing. Anyway I am relieved to be sitting here without any incidents.
Check-in was easy, but I did get pulled up for a bag search. No big deal. Found a Starbuck to have some food and coffee. The Arabic coffee served at most other places is certainly an acquired taste, so at least we know what we are getting at Starbucks. Surprisingly the food is good and the coffee is average. We depart at 3.50pm for Doha (Qatar),. We have a stopover for 1.5 hours before departing to Bangkok. The flight to Bangkok is 7 hours. WE arrive at 7am. Hopefully will get some sleep on the plane.
We are going to get a shock with the weather. Going from 15 degrees to 30 degrees with a lot more humidity. Then Hong Kong goes back to 15 degrees.

Adrya Kovarch Another Hadrian Arch! Jerash sounds very interesting. You must be both exhausted at this time in the trip?
Adrya Kovarch Wow, this must have been some games arena with all the arches and pillars on the outside wall. Fascinating!
Adrya Kovarch I assume these are all Roman ruins - they look it don't they. They certainly have been well preserved - not much Amman architecture?
Adrya Kovarch The Romans must have set up quite an outpost here.
Adrya Kovarch Interesting shot - good use of shadow Alan.
Adrya Kovarch The Romans must have considered this quite an exceptional place to build such a road. I hope you are not completely worn out and the cold has shifted.
