Been a while but looking forward to catching up with Allen, Roel and their wives. Plan to visit the Book Depository and of course Southfork
Up early Thursday 21st for flight to Dallas. Whilst here in the US have discovered Lyft which is a bit like Uber. Used it twice now in New Orleans, great service and cheaper than a taxi. Got to the airport, simple AA check in and baggage drop, then through security. Breakfast was a sandwich and a Coffee/Tea and then boarded at 0915 for the one hour thirty minute flight to DFW. Picked up the hire car and drove to the Hilton, we were all checked in by 1230pm. Light bite to lunch and then some laundry. Off out tonight with Deborah Traeger and her husband Darrell at The Hacienda Ranch. Great evening and lovely to catch-up
Friday 22nd. Up at 8am and an "Executive" breakfast on the 18th floor of the Hilton. Then decided we would visit the Book Depository from where President Kennedy was shot. With help from Waze got there at 0945, had a walk around Dealey Plaza and took some photo's of the Memorial, The "Grassy Knoll" and X marks the spot where it is believed Kennedy's death shot occurred. Then spent a very interesting couple of hours in the Book Depository 6th Floor Museum looking at the impact Kennedy and also his assassination had on the World. Weirdly enough it was the first Major event I remember in my life, at that time a 6 year old!! After finishing there we went to Dallas Galleria and had a drink. We then drove to a Nail Spa so that Lesley could get a pedicure. Then onto Best Buy to buy Lesley a new iPad Mini 4. Got a good deal on a 128GB unit. Lunch at Wendy's and then back to the Hilton and some work for Bob to set up the new iPad.
Out for dinner tonight at Five Sixty Wolfgang Puck in Reunion Tower. Great to catch up with old friends, Allan & Janine Pitts, Shannon & Wendy Wiser. Great food and plenty of story telling. Tomorrow aiming to do the George Bush Library at SMU and Southfork
Saturday 23rd. Well what a day today has been!! Both ends of the scale, George Bush US president and statesmen v JR Ewing, Oil Baron, Playboy and all round bad lad. First things first breakfast at Touchy's Tacos close to SMU, very enjoyable. Then 2 hours in the George Bush Presidential Library & Museum. Very interesting look into the life of a US president and his family. George Bush was in power when terrorists struck the Twin Towers. The section regarding this incident and the ongoing fight against terrorism is very informative. There is also a replication of the Oval Office here which is great to get pictures taken in. Best bit is a family film by his two daughters which shows the humorous side of the president. So having experienced state and diplomacy it is now off to Showbiz Dallas and Southfork ranch.
For Lesley this was a return to her time as a Dallas fan. JR, Bobby, Pammy , Sue Ellen and the Southfork Ranch. Today, James Martin was filming here, small world eh. Tour around the Ewing Ranch and House with the shadows of the characters everywhere. All of the outside shots were taken at the ranch with interiors shot in Carson City Studios. Iconic TV show of the late 70,s and early 80's along with a "Dallas 2" which only ran for three series from 2012. Lunch in Miss Ellie's Porch Cafe and then a drive back to the hotel.
Last night in Dallas and Lesley wanted a steak, ended up at Lawry's The Prime Rib. Cocktails in the bar with Blue Curaçao and then a Chacuterie starter. For Main Lesley had Filet Mignon and Bob had Prime Rib with Yorkshire Pudding. Food was excellent topped off with a lovely Pinot Noir
Off to Las Vegas in the morning, looking forward to that
