Today was the first day of class! Took place from 9-12, and was boring. We mostly talked about what public health NGOs each group will be working with--my group will be focusing on the elderly population, and will be going to a nursing home weekly. Startling statistic: my organization receives funding from the Indonesian government (therefore it isn't technically an NGO) to help pay for medicines of the 50 elderly people living at the home, but the funding is nowhere near enough--the organization only receives $40 per YEAR for ALL the patients. Clearly, this is very bad given that many of these patients need constant medication such as insulin. Our group will begin to tackle problems like these. After lunch at the place, a few friends and I wandered through the Ubud tourist market. The vendors are crazy aggressive, even if you comment that something is pretty they will instantly take it off the rack and try to put it on you while offering a price. I became better at bartering today, and bought a tank top for 40,000 rupiah ($3.85), so I call it a success. Then my friend and I headed off to the elephant temple, a place where everyone else opted out of going to so Kimia and I were the only ones who left. Boy it was so cool! It has been around since 10th century, and seriously looks like it has been overgrown by the rainforest. It is called the elephant temple because a statue of the god Ganesh (elephant god of education/knowledge) is housed there. Words can't explain how mystical it was there. We made friends with some random man named Ketut (funniest laugh in the world) who worked there, and he made us splash through A waterfall to see more ancient ruins! Once back from the temple, we got ready and headed out to dinner at a local organic place--very touristy, but it was delicious. To end the night, my friends and I hung out in a cool cafe sipping on tea until heading to the homestay at 10ish.

auntie lissa Good to hear that you didn't mention feeling tired...I hope that your jet lag is gone and the adjustment has been made. Is there anyway to guarantee a safe, secure and dedicated donation directly to the nursing home. Tackle the problem and let me know...what important work you are doing...I think you have an idea of just how important. Good buy on the tank top!!! Carry on my dear niece!!!!!!!!!! ooooxxxx
Mom It sounds like an interesting day, despite the boring class! I'm so glad you opted for the elephant temple ( Ketut was the name of the old man in the movie!) I would donate too- research how this could be done and get to the right source-
