Jetlag got the best of me again, given that I woke up at 530 and went to bed at midnight. We had breakfast at 730ish (banana pancake, fruit salad, and tea) and then headed to the banjar to get picked up. From 9AM-1PM we toured a local NGO (non-governmental organization) called IDEP; which is focused on environmental sustainability. IDEP's grounds was essentially a farm complete with fish ponds, huge herb garden, rice paddys, and produce crops. Our tour guide told all of us to try an herb leaf, saying it was "sweet." The minute we ate the leaf she started laughing--she tricked us! The herb (i don't know the name, she said it helped "cleanse the blood") was the absolutely worst tho go ever tasted--the extreme astringent bitterness lingered on my tongue for close to 30 mins. It was pretty funny though, since everyone was making grossed-out faces. She told us about the current environmental problems Bali faces due to high tourism and the diminishing agricultural industry. Something that shocked me was that she did a breakdown of the average profit a farmer makes in Bali--$145 every three months. So shocking, but it's normal given the average salary of other professions in Ubud (restaurant owners, salons, etc) is around $6. The tour guide then showed an empty mud paddy, and told us that we would be planting rice seedlings! I more than ankle deep in thick, squishy, sticky mud. Although it was gross, it was sorta fun to stomp around in since it was so squishy. After washing off, we had lunch and left awhile afterwards to head off to a gamelan (music instrument, kinda like a xylophone) and a Balinese dance ("legong") workshop. Both classes were a complicated workout, and given that I have absolutely no musical or dance aptitude, was very uncoordinated on my part haha. After getting back to the homestay, my friends and I got cheap beers (bitang) and played cards until heading over to dinner. All 20 of us filled the restaurant, and so we were there for almost 2 hours getting our food (craved American food, so I got chicken nuggets). It was pretty fun talking with everyone. After that we all got lost trying to find a hookah bar, which turned out to be boring and stale so the rest of the crowd went to a local bar club. I didn't go with them, and instead headed home with a few people since I am really exhausted. Bed time!
