The 14 hour plane ride from SFO to Hong Kong was miraculously not too bad. Irene (a friend of mine) and I knocked out for the first four hours, and the rest of the flight was characterized by random 40 minute naps, watching Hunger Games on the tv screen, and awkwardly waking up an old Vietnamese man who sat next to us so we could use the bathroom.
After a three hour layover, we were off to another 5 hour flight to Bali. It was crazy how close the landing strip is to the ocean--I thought the plane was going to crash into the water! We all piled onto a bus to go to Ubud (one hour north) where we will be living. My roommate Kimia and I got the best room in the homestay amazingly, complete with amazing canopy beds and extra room space. However, we randomly got forgotten when the supervisors picked everyone up to go to a welcome dinner--leaving us desperately trying to contact them with the help of our host family (who speak no English). It was pretty stressful, but luckily the person responsible came back and gave us dinner, and offered to drive us around Ubud since he felt bad for forgetting us. Ubud is an awesome town, more pics tomorrow when we go on a scavenger hunt through it!

Auntie Lissa I'm so glad that you arrived safely. It sounds like you got great "digs" (but too bad about missing the welcome dinner!!!). Oh well, you gotta roll with the mishaps which are bound to happen. How's the weather...a little steamy?? Keep the stories coming so I can hear all about your adventures.
marc ellyn Erica- can you hear the music yet? Hope you can get some sleep and have a great time exploring and eating Asian tropical food. You'll probably run into some gnarly prehistoric looking fruits that can look like medical anommalies but first make sure they're not the fried sago worms before putting them in your mouth, that is unless you're planning to study (crash course) tropical medicine TODAY. How does the water taste- don't forget a spoonful of gator aid. It's all gonna be great!!!!!!! Please keep us updated regularly. xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox xo xo x xxxx oooo o oooooxoxoxoxox Marc Ellyn
